Meta Doubles Down on Personal AI Agents: Muse Integrates Smart Glasses, Mac, and Email to Bridge Shopping and Productivity

Meta is transforming its personal AI assistant, Muse, into a core platform designed to cover every aspect of a user's daily life—extending from smart eyewear to desktop Mac environments, from e-commerce transactions to everyday office tasks. An extensive push toward "personal superintelligence" is accelerating rapidly.

On September 23, during Meta's annual Connect developer conference in Menlo Park, California, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled plans for Muse to integrate into the company's smart glasses lineup, add Mac-based computer control abilities, gain its own email address, and partner with major retailers including Walmart, Sephora, Best Buy, and Gap. Additionally, Meta introduced a handheld device called "Muse Charm," scheduled for release ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Muse, launched earlier this month, has already climbed to the top of Apple's App Store charts and just recently expanded into Canada. Zuckerberg framed Muse as Meta's most significant bet in consumer AI to date, stating, "In the coming years, I anticipate Muse will evolve into a personal superintelligence used by billions of people worldwide to achieve goals and improve their lives."

On the monetization front, Meta plans to offer large-scale free usage allowances while generating revenue through small commissions on user transactions. Bolstered by recent consecutive stock gains, Meta's shares have climbed 30% this month, potentially marking their best monthly performance since July 2013.

Metaverse Fades, Muse Takes Center Stage

This year's Connect conference presented a stark contrast to events from just a few years ago. Back then, Zuckerberg loudly championed the metaverse and even rebranded the company around it, but this year, the topic barely appeared. "We've decided to temporarily deprioritize the metaverse," Zuckerberg stated on stage.

Replacing it as the central narrative is "personal superintelligence." Zuckerberg, wearing a black T-shirt emblazoned with "BUILDING IS MY LOVE LANGUAGE," framed Muse as the "core" of Meta's overall vision. He delivered a live demonstration involving voice commands to Muse via smart glasses to book a calendar slot for a meeting with technical chief Andrew Bosworth—the demo ran smoothly.

Architecturally, each user's Muse operates within an isolated, private secure computing environment (which Meta calls "Muse Security Virtual Machine"), powered by the Muse Spark multimodal model trained specifically for personal agents. Unlike conventional chatbots, Muse emphasizes continuous background task execution, supports personality and role customization, and comes with a default persona named Jolly.

Full Hardware Lineup Refreshed, Glasses Become Key Entry Point

At Connect, Meta rolled out multiple hardware products tightly integrated with Muse to create perception gateways covering users' round-the-clock scenarios.

Within the glasses line, Meta established clearer product tiers: the $349 Ray-Ban Meta Audio drops the camera, prioritizing music, calls, and voice interaction with up to 12 hours of battery life, positioned for all-day wear; the third-generation Ray-Ban Meta, starting at $449, keeps the camera with upgrades to photography, noise cancellation, and battery life; and existing Ray-Ban Display adds features like navigation while expanding into new markets. Meta aims to offer over 100 eyewear options by year-end, including a collaboration with Blackpink member Lisa.

On the premium end, Meta unveiled Meta VR Glasses, which shift computing and battery components to an external device, slimming the headset to roughly 100 grams. Targeting viewing, immersive content, and multi-display productivity, it carries a $1,299.99 price tag with a planned spring 2027 launch.

Muse will integrate with these AI glasses over "the coming months," allowing users to activate the agent hands-free via wake words to handle scheduling, log meals, guide workouts, or even discover and purchase items they see. Meta says Muse will run in the background and proactively report back once tasks are completed.

Mac Control and Email Delegation, Unlocking Productivity Scenarios

On the productivity side, Meta announced bringing Muse's "computer use" capability to the Mac platform. After user authorization, Muse can control any app on a Mac and continue executing pre-scheduled tasks even when the user steps away.

"You can let it help you run a small business or handle your work," Meta's Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang said during the keynote. "You can leave your computer, and it will keep managing all your pending tasks."

Email functionality is also in development. In the future, Muse will have a dedicated email address, letting users add it to message threads or forward emails directly for handling. Wang stated the feature would arrive "soon" but offered no specific timeline.

Additionally, Muse will introduce real-time digital avatars, powered by a new AI model called Muse Realtime Avatar, enabling live video conversations with customized virtual representations of Muse.

Shopping Ecosystem Expands Rapidly, Open Platform Attracts Thousands of Developers

The shopping arena is Muse's most direct path to monetization. Meta has partnered with Stripe and Shopify, giving Muse access to Shopify's full product catalog and enabling purchases through Link and Shop Pay, with PayPal support also being expanded. New retail partners include Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair, travel platform Expedia, and grocery delivery platform Instacart (coming imminently). On the workplace side, new connectors span Box, GitHub, Granola, and Notion.

Notably, according to a report, Amazon blocked Muse from completing purchases on its platform just before the conference, citing lack of authorization.

On the platform openness front, Meta is now allowing developers to build their own Muse connectors. Wang revealed that within less than a week of opening the platform, Meta received over 1,500 applications. "I think this could be a generational opportunity," he said.

In terms of business logic, Meta intends to provide extensive free usage quotas while taking small cuts from transactions Muse helps facilitate. Publicly showcased cases already span shopping, travel, bill negotiation, and insurance scenarios. Meta says it will soon release the most powerful model in its family yet, driving a comprehensive upgrade across the Muse model suite.
