Insurance Stocks Decline Across the Board Amid Regulatory Concerns

Insurance stocks in Hong Kong experienced a broad decline. At the time of writing, CHINA LIFE (02628) fell 7.03% to HK$26.20, NCI (01336) dropped 6.55% to HK$48.08, CPIC (02601) decreased 5.88% to HK$31.40, and PICC P&C (02328) was down 2.95% to HK$14.78.

Market sentiment was influenced by reports suggesting that small and medium-sized insurers have been reducing their positions due to new solvency regulations, which is considered a contributing factor to recent volatility in the A-share market. According to Western Securities, while recent market adjustments have been partly driven by solvency assessment pressures faced by some insurers nearing the quarter-end, the overall impact should not be overstated. The pressure for forced position reductions is expected to gradually ease.

Insurers are set to begin密集 disclosing their 2025 annual reports next week, with strong expectations for earnings growth, suggesting potential opportunities for strategic positioning. Shenwan Hongyuan noted in a research report that new accounting standards will be fully implemented for non-listed insurers starting January 1, 2026, and the industry is currently in an adaptation period following the introduction of these rules. The implementation of new solvency regulations is still some time away.

In recent years, regulators have gradually relaxed restrictions on solvency requirements and external capital injections in response to insurers' operational needs. Given the recent volatility in capital markets, some insurers may adjust their equity allocations in the secondary market as part of routine operations aimed at maintaining stable solvency ratios and managing risk exposure near the quarter-end. Overall, the trend of insurance capital flowing into the market is expected to persist in a low-interest-rate environment, with investment methods likely becoming more diversified.
