A U.S. appeals court has reversed a previous decision, ruling in favor of Perplexity AI in a legal battle over access to Amazon's e-commerce website.

The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday sided with Perplexity AI, overturning a temporary injunction that had blocked the company's AI agent from accessing Amazon.com and conducting shopping activities on its behalf.

The court stated that it was the users of Perplexity AI's Comet browser, not the company itself, who utilized the AI-assisted tool to access Amazon's platform. As a result, the court found that Amazon is unlikely to succeed in its claim that Perplexity AI's agent violated the U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Amazon expressed disagreement with the Tuesday ruling, stating it remains confident in its case and is currently evaluating its next steps. Perplexity AI, meanwhile, said it will continue to fight for the right of internet users to choose any artificial intelligence tool they wish.
