Shares of Hainan Drinda New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (02865) rose by nearly 6%, climbing 5.79% to HK$32.9 by the time of writing, with a trading turnover of HK$204 million. The increase follows recent market reports that Meta Platforms, Inc. has entered into a partnership with Overview Energy to introduce solar power from space into its data centers. Under the agreement, Meta will gain priority access to up to 1 gigawatt of power capacity from Overview's space-based solar energy system. An initial orbital demonstration is planned for 2028, with commercial power delivery expected by 2030. In a statement, Nat Sahlstrom, Meta's Vice President of Energy and Sustainability, described the move as part of the company's large-scale artificial intelligence investment plan, which involves allocating hundreds of billions of dollars to secure the energy, infrastructure, and computing capacity required for its AI initiatives. According to estimates by Guojin Securities, assuming the average single-satellite power of global satellites increases proportionally with a 50% expansion in solar panel area between 2026 and 2028, space-based solar installations could exceed 400 megawatts in 2026 and reach 4 gigawatts by 2028. Dongwu Securities highlighted that DRINDA has acquired a 60% stake in Shanghai Fuyao Xinghe Aerospace Technology through a cash transaction, giving it indirect control of Shanghai Xuntian Qianhe. The company currently holds a substantial order book covering various types of satellites for remote sensing, communications, and computing applications, and it can also provide in-orbit verification resources for space-based solar power projects.
