An independent cybersecurity agency released a report on Wednesday estimating that the cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a subsidiary of India's Tata Motors, in August caused approximately £1.9 billion (about $2.55 billion) in damages to the UK economy, affecting over 5,000 organizations across the country.

The report was authored by the UK Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC), an independent non-profit organization comprised of industry experts, including former leaders from the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). The report indicates that losses could increase if there are unexpected delays in JLR's production returning to pre-attack levels.

According to the CMC report, “This incident appears to be the most economically damaging cyber event that the UK has suffered, with the majority of the financial impact arising from lost manufacturing output by Jaguar Land Rover and its suppliers.”

Earlier this month, JLR began to resume production after nearly six weeks of shutdown due to the cyberattack. The luxury car manufacturer operates three factories in the UK, producing approximately 1,000 vehicles daily.

This incident is part of a notable series of cyberattacks impacting major UK companies this year. In April, the online services of retailer Marks & Spencer were shut down for two months due to a hack, resulting in around £300 million (about $400 million) in losses.

Analysts estimate that JLR incurs losses of roughly £50 million per week due to the production halt. The UK government provided £1.5 billion in loan guarantees to support the company and its suppliers at the end of September.
