Samsung Establishes AI Research Institute with 30-Year-Old Executive as First Director

Samsung Electronics has appointed Lee Kang-wook, a newly promoted executive in his 30s, as the inaugural director of its newly established "Samsung Research (SR) Nova Artificial Intelligence (AI) Institute." Born in 1986, Lee was promoted to executive vice president in the year-end personnel reshuffle announced on the 25th of last month, making him one of the youngest executives in this round of promotions. Leveraging his youthful leadership and AI expertise, he will spearhead Samsung's next-generation AI technology research.

According to industry sources in South Korea on the 3rd, Samsung Electronics recently underwent organizational restructuring and personnel appointments. Prior to this promotion, Lee worked in the AI model team at Samsung Research's DX division, where he played a pivotal role in developing generative AI language models and code models.

Industry analysts suggest that Lee's appointment as head of the Nova AI Lab reflects Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong's personnel philosophy of prioritizing performance and growth potential over age. His youthful leadership and technical expertise are seen as key to aligning with Samsung's AI innovation strategy.

Lee Kang-wook graduated with a degree in computer engineering from Handong University and later earned his master's and doctoral degrees in computer engineering from KAIST. He joined Samsung Electronics in 2018.
