OpenAI Races to Launch Personal Assistant "o" to Counter Meta Muse's Surge, Expected at Dev Day

As Meta's personal AI agent Muse enjoys a meteoric rise after receiving JPMorgan's highest rating, OpenAI is accelerating the launch of a persistent AI assistant called "o" to directly counter the increasingly fierce AI agent competition.

According to a recent report by tech media outlet wccftech, OpenAI has reportedly added the "o" branding to its ChatGPT Pro product documentation, signaling an imminent official release expected to debut at the Dev Day event this Tuesday (September 29).

This move is widely interpreted as a direct response to Meta Muse's recent strong performance—JPMorgan, in its latest Assistant Benchmark evaluation, ranked Meta Muse as the current top-tier AI agent.

This Dev Day will also bring more major announcements: OpenAI is expected to simultaneously launch a new subscription tier called ChatGPT Pro Max, priced at up to $500 per month, focusing on ultra-fast response experiences. Meanwhile, "o" is also rumored to work in coordination with an OpenAI consumer-grade AI hardware device that resembles a donut and features moving parts, further expanding its product ecosystem boundaries.

"o": Always Online, Aiming at Long-Task Scenarios

According to the report, in response to Muse's challenge, OpenAI's solution is to launch a product positioned as a "persistent AI assistant"—"o."

Currently, public information is limited, but @synthwavedd posted on social platform X that "o" is reportedly powered by "Aeon," a specific variant of GPT-6 Astra, which is said to have outstanding advantages in handling long-running tasks—precisely the core capability that an efficient personal agent must possess.

In terms of the competitive landscape, "o" is not facing Muse alone. OpenAI's entry this time also targets Grok Bot and Hermes Agent. With three parties vying for position, the intensity of competition in the AI personal assistant track is rapidly escalating.

Dev Day Double Strike: New Brand + Premium Subscription

In addition to "o," OpenAI is expected to simultaneously launch multiple major updates at Dev Day, forming a combined punch.

On the subscription pricing front, OpenAI plans to introduce ChatGPT Pro Max at a monthly fee of up to $500, focusing on ultra-fast responses. According to reports, this performance will be supported by Cerebras' Wafer-Scale Engine, targeting professional users with extremely high demands for response speed and performance.

On the hardware ecosystem front, "o" will also serve as a software companion, deeply integrating with an upcoming OpenAI consumer-grade AI device. The device is rumored to have a donut-like shape and may feature moving parts, demonstrating OpenAI's continued ambitious layout in the AI hardware space.

According to reports, the simultaneous advancement of both product lines indicates that OpenAI is attempting to build competitive barriers in both software agents and hardware terminals simultaneously, in order to respond to multi-directional pressure from competitors like Meta.

JPMorgan Crowns Muse, OpenAI Under Mounting Pressure

The rise of Meta Muse is the direct trigger for OpenAI's emergency response this time.

According to JPMorgan's latest Assistant Benchmark evaluation, Meta Muse ranked first among all participating AI agents, surpassing multiple competitors including OpenAI's products. This authoritative endorsement has kept Muse attracting market attention recently and has, to some extent, captured the pre-heat volume that originally belonged to OpenAI's Dev Day.

Muse is a personal AI agent capable of executing multi-step tasks on behalf of users. Its core capabilities include: autonomously opening a cloud browser, browsing web pages like a human, and continuing to process tasks in the background even after the user closes the application.

To address privacy concerns, Muse runs within a dedicated isolated cloud virtual machine (VM), equipped with an independent browser, used for securely storing user data and login credentials.
