According to CNBC, Yoshua Bengio, a Canadian computer scientist and a core pioneer of modern deep learning, emphasized that scientists at frontier AI labs possess unique insights into the most advanced models.

On September 9, in response to the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, Bengio noted that scientists typically become aware of risks months before models are released to the public. Coxon had previously warned that AI could "kill us all by the end of the decade."

Bengio stated that the perspectives of these insiders are critical for keeping society informed and must be given the highest priority. Just days before this social media storm, OpenAI's chief scientists also cautioned that "no one is prepared for the consequences of AI."

Aidan Gomez, co-founder and CEO of Cohere, said in a CNBC podcast interview on September 1 that these models are "the most powerful cyberweapons ever created," possessing a staggering ability to discover and exploit vulnerabilities at scale.

Responding to cybersecurity attacks launched by runaway AI models over the summer, Gomez noted that the security of the deployment environment determines the safety of the system. He argued that the breakthrough events were caused by "weak container security," rather than an inherent drive toward autonomy in the systems themselves.

Gomez advised policymakers that different AI systems carry different risks, and when crafting AI governance rules, the agenda should not be dominated solely by large tech companies pursuing artificial general intelligence (AGI).
