Oppenheimer Optimistic Ahead of Palantir (PLTR.US) Earnings: Foresees Q2 Beat and Guidance Upgrade, $200 Price Target Reflects AI Software Leader's Revaluation

Ahead of Palantir Technologies (PLTR.US) reporting its second-quarter results after the market close on August 3rd, Oppenheimer analyst Param Singh released a highly optimistic forecast on July 27th. The analyst reiterated an "Outperform" rating and a $200 price target, predicting a "solid beat and raise" quarter, despite the AI software sector experiencing significant volatility and Palantir's stock falling roughly 30% year-to-date.

Q2 Earnings Preview: 85% Growth Surpasses Guidance, Full-Year Outlook Raised

Singh expects Palantir's second-quarter revenue to grow approximately 85% year-over-year, significantly exceeding the company's official guidance midpoint of 79%. Wall Street consensus forecasts call for adjusted earnings per share of $0.35 on revenue of $18.1 billion, nearly doubling from the $0.16 EPS and $10 billion in revenue reported a year ago. Oppenheimer further predicts Palantir will raise its full-year revenue growth guidance from the current 71% to above 75%—a combination of exceeding expectations and raising guidance that is exceptionally rare in the current software industry.

U.S. Government Business: Dual Drivers from Homeland Security and Middle East Conflict

Singh emphasizes that the U.S. government business remains Palantir's core growth engine, projecting the segment will achieve roughly 80% growth in the second quarter. Growth is primarily fueled by increased spending from the Department of Homeland Security and surging defense demand linked to the Middle East conflict. Oppenheimer's industry research indicates Palantir is experiencing "aggressive expansion" across multiple U.S. military branches and combatant commands. Since 2026, Palantir's defense footprint has deepened: the Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) awarded Palantir USG a production contract to extend its AI operating system licenses across the entire DoD; the U.S. Army consolidated approximately 75 separate contracts, officially designating the company's Maven Smart System as a program of record, signing a 10-year enterprise agreement with a ceiling of $10 billion. Additionally, the DoD recently granted Palantir a contract worth up to $250 million.

However, the outlook for international government business is more cautious. Singh anticipates international growth will slow, as several European allies continue to seek alternatives to Palantir. Reports indicate the UK is conducting a comprehensive review of its contract with Palantir for the National Health Service (NHS), facing political pressure to invoke a break clause when the initial term concludes in early 2027. This international headwind partially offsets the robust growth in the U.S.

U.S. Commercial Business: The 'Immunity' Logic Behind 135% Growth

U.S. commercial business is another key growth driver Oppenheimer is bullish on. Singh expects this segment to achieve over 135% year-over-year growth in the second quarter, with full-year growth potentially remaining above 125%. Despite market concerns that large language model (LLM) providers could erode Palantir's competitive advantage, Singh's research suggests "these fears are overblown." Oppenheimer believes Palantir's Ontology supports more complex workflows and applications, whereas LLM providers tend to favor simpler workflows—a technological distinction that forms Palantir's moat in complex enterprise scenarios. More notably, Singh points out that Palantir appears "immune" to the deal delays affecting other software vendors this quarter. Agentic AI tools like Orchestrator, Agent Engine, and Agent SDK, unveiled at DevCon 6 on July 14th, further strengthen Palantir's competitive position in complex enterprise AI deployment.

Bull vs. Bear: Burry's Short Position and Wall Street Divergence

While Oppenheimer is bullish, "Big Short" investor Michael Burry has increased his short position against Palantir ahead of the earnings report. Burry argues Palantir's valuation remains too high, warning that even a minor slowdown in AI growth could pressure the stock. Palantir's current valuation is indeed elevated: the stock trades around $122 to $132, with a price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 135x, within a 52-week range of $106.37 to $207.52. The consensus rating from 32 analysts tracked by S&P Global is "Buy," with an average price target of $182.20—below Oppenheimer's $200 target but still representing significant upside. Citi analyst Tyler Radke recently reiterated a "Buy" rating but lowered his price target from $225 to $200, citing that post-earnings underperformance makes the risk-reward profile more attractive. DA Davidson raised its price target to $175.
