Salesforce CEO Apologizes for Comments Supporting Trump's Deployment of National Guard to San Francisco

Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff issued an apology on Friday for his remarks suggesting that President Trump might send federal troops to the company's headquarters in San Francisco. Benioff wrote in a post on X, "After listening carefully to the voices of my San Francisco neighbors and local officials, I believe the National Guard is not needed to address safety issues in San Francisco." The Trump administration had recently deployed the National Guard in Portland, Oregon, and Chicago, sparking protests and lawsuits. Earlier last week, Benioff had expressed his support for having troops stationed in San Francisco, coinciding with the company’s annual Dreamforce conference taking place Tuesday through Thursday in downtown San Francisco. "We don’t have enough police, so if they can act as police, I fully support it," Benioff stated. His comments faced backlash from local politicians and leaders. California Governor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco officials held a press conference on Wednesday to convey the message that federal troops were not welcome in the city and noted that crime rates are declining.
