Germany Reportedly Seeks White Knight for Commerzbank to Counter UniCredit's Takeover Bid

According to informed sources, Germany has approached several European banks to inquire about their potential interest in assisting Commerzbank to defend against a takeover offer made by Italy's UniCredit earlier this year.

The sources, who requested anonymity, stated that German officials have held informal discussions with relevant banks to explore the feasibility of introducing a new strategic investor to acquire shares or even take over the Frankfurt-based bank. These talks have not progressed beyond a very preliminary stage.

This development highlights Berlin's efforts to maintain Commerzbank's independence while also revealing the limitations it faces in countering UniCredit. A spokesperson for the German finance ministry declined to comment.

The German government continues to oppose what it terms a "hostile takeover." Since beginning its investment at the end of 2024, UniCredit has been steadily increasing its shareholding. Berlin is concerned that the transaction could shift decision-making authority for business critical to financing German small and medium-sized enterprises from Frankfurt to Milan.
