A family in Donghai County, Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, has been devastated after a routine pest control purchase turned fatal, leaving one child dead and three other family members poisoned. The tragic incident, which occurred on July 13, has prompted a police investigation and highlighted the dangers of a highly toxic pesticide now banned for retail sale to individuals.

According to a report from a local news outlet on September 1, a farmer identified by the surname Ge stated that his wife sent their child to a market to buy a pesticide for protecting their stored wheat. Upon opening the purchase, she discovered it was aluminum phosphide, which she then used without knowing its lethal hazard: when exposed to moisture, this chemical releases phosphine gas, a potent and toxic fumigant. The lack of awareness led to the entire family—including three children and the wife—being poisoned.

The consequences were severe. The youngest daughter, referred to by the pseudonym Momo, developed a critical condition and tragically passed away on July 18 after rescue efforts failed. The oldest daughter remains hospitalized. The farmer, Ge, has reported that medical expenses for his eldest daughter have already exceeded 300,000 to 400,000 yuan. A forensic identification certificate issued by the Donghai County Public Security Bureau confirmed that Momo's death was caused by phosphine poisoning.

Where to start understanding the incident

The village committee has since corroborated Ge's account of the events. As part of the ongoing investigation, police have taken the individuals suspected of selling the aluminum phosphide into custody. This case underscores the extreme risks associated with the improper use of agricultural chemicals.

Why this specific chemical is under scrutiny

Aluminum phosphide is classified as a highly toxic pesticide. In a move to prevent such tragedies, China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs implemented a nationwide ban as of March 1, 2025, explicitly prohibiting its sale in small quantities to the general public.
