The London Metal Exchange (LME) has released its latest implementation schedule for the Electronic Options project, confirming that electronic options trading functionality will be introduced on the LMEselect v10 platform.

Market testing environments are scheduled to open on October 19, 2026, initially supporting copper options, with the official go-live date set for March 30, 2027. The modernization roadmap for the LME options market centers on two key initiatives: the Auto Expiry mechanism and electronic options trading.

Auto Expiry mechanism: Options have already transitioned from American Style to European Style; the new rules take effect on September 21, 2026, with the first automated expiry processing scheduled for October 7, 2026.

Electronic options trading: Copper options will be the first product to launch on March 30, 2027; the initiative promotes electronic options trading quoted in premiums; the LME has completed major internal development and testing phases and is now preparing to open testing to the market; listed contract months are fixed at M1, M2, M3, and M4; strike prices will be automatically listed daily by the system, covering At the Money options and a fixed number of strike levels, while users also have the ability to create custom strike contracts; the minimum tick size for electronic options will align with the corresponding metal futures.

Additionally, the LME plans to introduce a market maker and liquidity provider program, subject to regulatory approval, which will feature Mass Quote functionality and Market Maker Protections. The initial safeguard measures include Volume over Time, allowing maximum executed volume limits to be set within specified time periods.

This announcement marks a substantive milestone in the digital transformation of the LME options market. Through the introduction of electronic quoting, batch market making, and the Auto Expiry mechanism, the LME aims to reduce operational risks in options trading, enhance trading efficiency, attract greater participation from market makers and institutional investors, and lay the groundwork for building more robust liquidity in the metal options space.

Notably, the LME has adopted a gradual deployment approach, providing the market with a testing period exceeding five months, which underscores its priority on ensuring full market readiness and the establishment of sustainable liquidity.
