Official data released on September 9 shows that in August 2026, China's producer price index for manufactured goods rose 3.8% from a year earlier and 0.4% from the previous month.
The purchasing price index for industrial producers climbed 5.8% year-on-year and 0.3% month-on-month. For the January-to-August period, factory gate prices averaged 2.0% higher than the same period last year, while industrial producer purchasing prices increased by an average of 3.2%.
Within the August factory gate price index, means of production prices advanced 5.0% year-on-year, contributing about 3.92 percentage points to the overall rise in producer prices. Breaking this down, prices for the mining industry jumped 17.8%, raw materials industries rose 6.7%, and processing industries increased 3.1%.
In contrast, consumer goods prices fell 0.5%, dragging the overall producer price index down by approximately 0.10 percentage points. Among consumer goods, food prices declined 2.3%, clothing prices dropped 1.2%, and general daily-use items slipped 0.8%, while durable consumer goods prices gained 1.2%.
Looking at industrial producer purchasing prices, non-ferrous metal materials and wire products surged 19.8%, fuel and power costs advanced 9.8%, chemical raw materials rose 9.5%, textile raw materials increased 3.8%, and ferrous metal materials edged up 0.3%. On the downside, building materials and non-metallic products fell 3.2%, while agricultural by-product prices decreased 0.5%.
