Economic Crisis Forecaster Anticipates Fed Inaction, US Economy Faces Q4 Test

Former bank analyst Meredith Whitney, who gained prominence for issuing a warning before the 2007 global financial crisis, has stated that the US economy will face a "reckoning" in the fourth quarter as the one-time boost from the World Cup and the lingering effects of fiscal spending begin to fade.

Whitney, speaking in an interview on Tuesday, noted that a real-time indicator tracking weekly credit card balances—reflecting consumer spending rather than revolving debt—has shown slowing growth compared to May. At the same time, US consumers are managing the pressure from rising gasoline prices.

The founder and CEO of Meredith Whitney Advisory Group suggested these factors will provide justification for the Federal Reserve to maintain its current interest rate policy on Wednesday. She dismissed arguments from firms like Citadel Securities that a surprise rate hike would bolster the credibility of Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh.

Whitney believes that Warsh's approach of establishing five policy working groups has effectively bought him several months, eliminating the need for an immediate policy shift. "I think they will keep rates unchanged while continuing to use hawkish language to retain flexibility for future actions," she stated. Regarding Warsh, she added, "His inclination is to wait and ensure he makes the right decision."

Addressing US Treasury yields and the housing market, Whitney expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of monetary policy. "I'm not sure they can lower long-term rates," she said, explaining that persistently high long-term yields are fundamentally a "fiscal problem" stemming from Washington's reluctance to control debt levels. She added that this factor could keep interest rates elevated for an extended period, regardless of the Federal Reserve's policy stance.
