The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) surged 5.02% in pre-market trading on Thursday, as a wave of bullish news from the memory chip sector ignited investor enthusiasm. The rally was primarily driven by Samsung Electronics' blowout second-quarter earnings report and a series of industry forecasts pointing to a persistent DRAM supply shortage through 2027.

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, reported a record quarterly net profit of 71.63 trillion won, with operating profit in its semiconductor division surging over 18-fold year-over-year. The company attributed the stellar performance to robust demand for AI chips and projected that the global memory chip shortage will persist until 2028. Samsung also announced plans to lock in 60% to 70% of its total chip production capacity through five-year contracts, signaling strong long-term demand visibility.

Adding to the positive sentiment, TrendForce issued a report projecting that DRAM supply growth will fail to keep pace with accelerating demand through 2027, as HBM production continues to crowd out capacity for conventional DRAM. Goldman Sachs also held a memory expert call predicting double-digit percentage price increases for traditional DRAM this year and the possibility of HBM prices doubling in 2027. The combination of Samsung's record earnings and the increasingly tight supply-demand outlook for memory chips provided a powerful catalyst for the DRAM ETF's pre-market surge.
