S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on Friday that Bloom Energy Corp. (BE.US), Illumina Inc. (ILMN.US), and Everpure Inc. (P.US) will be added to the S&P 500 Index during the latest quarterly rebalancing. According to the index provider, these three companies will replace Molson Coors Beverage Co., Trade Desk Inc., and Builders FirstSource Inc. effective before the market opens on September 21.

In after-hours trading, Bloom Energy shares surged 6%, while Illumina climbed 1.7% and Everpure rose 2.2%. The fuel cell manufacturer Bloom Energy reported results in July that more than doubled expectations and raised its full-year guidance for the second consecutive quarter, signaling exceptionally strong demand from data centers. The company produces fuel cells that generate electricity from natural gas, and its systems are in high demand for powering data center operations.

Life sciences firm Illumina also lifted its full-year total revenue outlook in July to a level above analyst estimates, while computer storage company Everpure similarly delivered earnings that beat projections.

The growth of passive investing has amplified the significance of being included in the S&P 500. Based on July guidance, companies must possess a market capitalization of at least $22.7 billion and meet requirements related to profitability, liquidity, and free float to qualify for index membership. As part of the non-cyclical adjustment, Reddit Inc. joined the S&P 500 in August, taking the place of AvalonBay Communities Inc.
