Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries (U96), and Sarawak Energy Berhad said on Oct, 17 2025 that the Energy Market Authority of Singapore has granted them Conditional Approval to import about 1 GW of renewable electricity from Sarawak to Singapore starting around 2035. SP PowerInterconnect will act as the Project’s technical partner.

The electricity will be generated mainly from hydropower certified under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard and transmitted to Singapore via more than 700 km of subsea cables. The initiative represents Singapore’s first large-scale 24/7 renewable baseload power import programme and is viewed as a building block for the ASEAN Power Grid.

The consortium has already signed a preferred supplier agreement with Prysmian Group to optimise the design, installation and protection of the subsea interconnector cable.

Including an earlier Conditional Approval to import 1.2 GW from Vietnam, Sembcorp now holds approvals covering 2.2 GW of future renewable imports, bringing the company closer to Singapore’s national target of 6 GW by 2035.

Sembcorp said the latest approval is not expected to have a material impact on its earnings per share or net tangible asset per share for the financial year ending Dec, 31 2025.
