An artificial intelligence cloud computing company is making its first move into the Asian market, planning to build its initial data centers in the region to tap into a fast-growing area for computing power demand.

CoreWeave, Inc. has announced plans to construct three new data centers in Indonesia, with a combined capacity of 360 megawatts. These facilities are designed to serve AI labs, startups, and large enterprise clients across Southeast Asia. The company stated that the data centers are expected to become operational by 2028, adding that it will invest billions of dollars in the project, though it could not provide a specific investment amount.

Indonesia is emerging as a key hub for AI infrastructure development, driven by the rapid adoption of cloud computing, stricter data localization regulations, and substantial investments from U.S. tech giants. For instance, Amazon and Microsoft have committed billions of dollars to build related infrastructure in the country. According to Research and Markets, the Indonesian data center market is projected to more than double in size, reaching $6.08 billion by 2031.

In 2021, Amazon pledged to invest $5 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure in Indonesia, while Microsoft plans to invest $1.7 billion by 2028. These investments are expected to create tens of thousands of jobs and further elevate Indonesia's role in the regional digital economy.

CoreWeave, Inc. said it will form a local team to operate the new data centers, which will further boost the development of Indonesia's domestic data center industry. The company currently operates 49 data centers across North America and Europe, serving clients including OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft.

The company noted that it is currently using over 1 gigawatt of power capacity and has another 3.5 gigawatts under contract. It is working to expand its data center footprint to meet growing demand for access to more Nvidia AI chips, while also selling higher-margin software and services to customers. This year, CoreWeave's AI computing capacity is essentially sold out. The company is rapidly increasing capital expenditure and accelerating the construction and launch of new data centers through various financing initiatives, while also seeking to broaden its client base beyond traditional technology companies.
