Kirby Corporation (KEX) shares tumbled 5.29% intraday following the release of its second-quarter 2026 financial results, which showed a mixed performance. While the company posted revenue of $922.4 million, surpassing the consensus estimate of $870.7 million, and earnings per share of $1.67 in line with expectations, investors focused on the pressure in the marine transportation segment.

Marine transportation, which accounts for the largest portion of Kirby's revenue, saw its operating income decline to $87.8 million, resulting in a segment margin of 16.4%, down 3.7 percentage points from the prior year. Net earnings attributable to shareholders were $89.7 million, flat year over year, despite a 7.82% increase in total revenue. The distribution and services segment showed strength with a 6% revenue increase and higher operating income, but this was not enough to offset concerns about the core marine business.

Looking ahead, management reiterated full-year EPS growth guidance of 5% to 15%, with results expected to trend toward the upper end of the range. The company also highlighted ongoing share buybacks. However, the immediate market reaction reflected disappointment with the near-term profitability squeeze in marine transportation, which overshadowed the top-line beat and steady full-year outlook.
