UnitedHealth's stock surged 5.39% in pre-market trading following the release of its second-quarter 2026 financial results, which significantly exceeded analyst expectations across key metrics.
The healthcare giant reported adjusted earnings per share of $6.38, beating the consensus estimate of $4.90. Revenue came in at $112 billion, surpassing expectations of approximately $110.85 billion. A critical measure of cost efficiency, the medical cost ratio, improved to 86.7%, better than the anticipated 88.47%.
Bolstered by these results, the company raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings per share guidance to a range of $19.50 to $20.00, up from the previous forecast and above the analyst estimate of $18.47. The strong performance was attributed to effective medical cost controls, improved operations in its Optum health services segment, and strategic plan design changes.
