Data released on Tuesday revealed that Korean battery manufacturers experienced a year-over-year decline in global market share from January to July 2025, despite overall growth in global electric vehicle battery usage.

According to data compiled by energy market tracking firm SNE Research, the combined market share of South Korea's three major battery companies - LG Energy Solution, SK On Limited, and Samsung SDI - in the electric vehicle battery sector decreased by 4.5 percentage points to 16.7% compared to the same period last year.

During this period, total battery usage for global electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) reached 590.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh), representing a 35.3% increase from the previous year.

LG Energy Solution's battery usage totaled 56.1 GWh, marking a 9% increase year-over-year, maintaining its third-place position globally. The company captured 9.5% of the global market, down from 11.8% in 2024.

SK On, ranked fifth, recorded electric vehicle battery usage of 24.6 GWh, up 17.4% year-over-year, but its market share stood at 4.2%, declining by 0.6 percentage points.

Samsung SDI, positioned eighth, saw its electric vehicle battery usage drop to 17.7 GWh, a decrease of 10.6%, with a market share of 3% due to weak demand from European and North American automakers.

China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) remains the largest market participant, holding a global market share of 37.5%, slightly lower than the 37.8% recorded in the same period last year.
