Alphabet's (GOOGL.US) self-driving subsidiary Waymo is reportedly preparing to launch commercial robotaxi services in San Diego, Las Vegas, and Detroit. While the exact launch timeline remains undisclosed, reports suggest the service could become publicly available by 2026.

A Waymo spokesperson confirmed that while the company has already secured autonomous ride-hailing permits in California, it still requires a Transportation Network Company license in Michigan and must pass testing approvals from Nevada’s Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation Authority before commencing operations.

"We adhere to a rigorous safety framework and will only deploy services in these cities after thorough technology validation and obtaining necessary permits, targeting a 2026 launch," the spokesperson stated.

Currently, Waymo operates its autonomous taxi service in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta. The company has also announced plans to expand to Boston, Seattle, Denver, Miami, New York City, and Washington, D.C.
