The latest significant milestone in the Pudong Airport Phase IV expansion project has been reached as the municipal-support Energy Center project successfully completed the concrete structure topping-out for all its individual buildings.

This transition marks the full shift into the decoration and equipment installation stages, setting the stage for equipment commissioning readiness by May next year. The Phase IV expansion of Pudong Airport is a critical undertaking for Shanghai's development as an international shipping hub, encompassing eight project clusters including the T3 terminal area, airfield works, and municipal support facilities.

As a key component of the municipal support works, the Energy Center is designed to perform the essential role of supplying cooling and heating to the future T3 terminal building. The facility spans a total floor area of 22,000 square meters and includes a high-voltage diesel generator room, a 35kV substation, the Energy Center's main complex, and three 24,000-cubic-meter thermal storage tanks.

The current construction milestone saw the structural topping-out of the generator room, substation, and the Energy Center's main building. Construction on the Energy Center project began in September of last year. Throughout the process, the team overcame challenges such as relocating trees, filling waterways, and navigating typhoon and flood seasons by coordinating safety, quality, and schedule. Through optimized construction organization and scientific allocation of manpower, materials, and machinery, every critical milestone was successfully secured.

With the concerted efforts of all parties involved, the project completed all foundation works in March of this year. By June, the thermal storage tanks had formally entered the tank wall inverted construction phase, leading up to the current topping-out of all main building structures. Once operational, the Energy Center will utilize off-peak nighttime electricity to store cooling and thermal energy, and release it during daytime peak hours to continuously supply low-carbon energy to the airport.

Functioning like an energy-saving "power bank," the facility will help balance the regional grid load while enhancing the airport's energy system peak-shaving capability, effectively reducing the airport's carbon emissions.
