Former Deputy Director of China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission Sentenced for Bribery

A former senior official at China's banking and insurance regulator has been sentenced for bribery and influence peddling.

The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court publicly announced the first-instance verdict on July 17, 2026, in the case of Zhang Jinsong, the former deputy director of the Legal Affairs Department at the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission.

The court found Zhang guilty of accepting bribes and sentenced him to 13 years in prison, along with a fine of 2 million yuan. He was also convicted of using his influence to solicit bribes, receiving a sentence of seven years and six months and a fine of 500,000 yuan.

The combined sentence totals 16 years of imprisonment and a fine of 2.5 million yuan. All illicit gains from the bribery offenses have been ordered confiscated and turned over to the state treasury.
