Trump Set to Meet with Zelensky as Russia-Ukraine Stalemate Persists

Before delivering a late-night address and the July 4th fireworks display, U.S. President Donald Trump held separate phone calls with two individuals who have proven more difficult to manage than he initially anticipated at the start of his second term: Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues unabated, with deadly attacks occurring in both nations' capitals. Trump had previously predicted he could resolve the war between the two countries in a single day, but the reality has proven to be far more complex.

A senior U.S. official disclosed on Sunday, "Over the past few months, the battlefield situation has clearly reached a stalemate, with neither side making significant progress. The President feels deeply that this conflict must be ended as soon as possible."

Concurrently, Trump has shifted his foreign policy focus towards regions like Latin America and Iran. However, the Russia-Ukraine war, which began during the Biden administration, persists.

The war has resulted in heavy casualties and comes at a high cost. It has tested the alliance between the United States and Europe, and the world's perception of the White House is now markedly different from what it was in January 2025, following the Venezuela crisis and amidst the volatile situation with Iran.

Trump is scheduled to meet with Zelensky on Wednesday at a NATO conference in Europe. The entire world—including Putin—will be watching closely.
