Legal Action Against Market Monopoly Drives Healthy Platform Economy Growth

On July 25, the State Administration for Market Regulation took legal action against Ctrip Group Co., Ltd. for abusing its market dominance to enforce monopolistic practices, imposing fines and confiscations totaling 5.179 billion yuan. This firm response to monopoly behavior sends a clear signal aimed at guiding the platform economy toward sustainable and healthy development, while reinforcing defenses for fair market competition.

Online booking platforms offer consumers convenience through extensive selection and price comparison benefits, also pushing the hotel industry to enhance service quality. However, some leading platforms have recently leveraged their traffic dominance and pricing privileges to squeeze merchant operations, engaging in unfair competition to capture market share.

According to the administration's investigation, Ctrip used its vast user base to control traffic distribution rules, requiring hotels to enter exclusive agreements and mandating "lowest prices across all platforms." It enforced these monopolistic practices through punitive measures such as limiting traffic and deducting reservation deposits. This behavior severely infringes on hotel operators' autonomy in business and pricing, while creating barriers for hotels to join other platforms, significantly stifling market competition and innovation.

The so-called "low prices" and "concessions" mask an attempt by the platform to exclude competitors and monopolize market share. This substantial penalty serves as a warning for leading platform companies: the larger and more influential they become, the more they must operate in compliance to repay consumer trust and foster the overall health of the platform economy ecosystem. Regulators clearly and firmly signal that while encouraging and promoting platform economic growth, stronger antitrust enforcement is essential to effectively prevent and stop platforms from abusing data, technology, and capital advantages to harm competition, innovation, and consumer interests, elevating the platform economy to a new level.

As a vital part of the market economy, platform companies' innovative development relies on orderly competition and effective government oversight. Regulators need to strengthen ongoing supervision of the platform economy, guiding businesses toward positive growth and building a multi-win industrial ecosystem. All platform companies should take this as a lesson, protecting their reputation and truly winning the market and future through technological innovation, service upgrades, and model optimization.
