Google Enhances Gemini with Mental Health Support Features as AI Expands Role in Sensitive Situations

Google is introducing new mental health support features for its Gemini AI, reflecting a growing trend of individuals turning to artificial intelligence for assistance during personal and sensitive moments.

The approach involves timely intervention when conversations suggest a user may need help. Gemini will now display a redesigned "Get Help" prompt, developed in collaboration with clinical experts, to guide users toward appropriate resources. In more serious cases, such as when signs of self-harm or suicide are detected, the chatbot will activate a simple one-click option to directly connect users to crisis hotlines via phone, text, or chat. Once this option appears, it remains visible throughout the conversation.

Google is also providing financial backing for this initiative. The company plans to invest $30 million over the next three years to support global crisis hotlines, with an additional $4 million allocated to a partnership with ReflexAI to help train responders using AI tools. This development indicates that interactions with Gemini are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and Google is working to implement corresponding safeguards as usage scenarios evolve.
