A recent report from a securities firm indicates that the 2026 summer movie season achieved growth in both box office revenue and audience numbers, signaling a moderate market recovery, with blockbuster titles continuing to serve as the primary drivers of ticket sales. The report suggests keeping an eye on core production companies behind quality films, leading cinema chains benefiting from record-high screening sessions and increased penetration of premium screens, as well as film production firms with strong capabilities in distributing imported films and operating revenue-sharing titles.

The firm's key viewpoints are as follows:

Steady Growth in Summer Season Performance, With Box Office Climbing Month by Month

Looking at overall box office figures, data from a film industry tracker shows that the 2026 summer season (June 1 to August 31) generated a total of 12.498 billion yuan in revenue, a 4.4% year-on-year increase, maintaining steady growth. On a monthly basis, June saw only 1.65 billion yuan in ticket sales due to a lack of major titles to stimulate audience demand. However, July and August surged to 5.02 billion yuan and 5.83 billion yuan respectively, collectively contributing nearly 90% of the season's total. The momentum built over consecutive months, with the late-season surge proving crucial to achieving overall growth.

Supply-Side Quality Improvements With Reduced Volume, and Demand-Side Recovery in Attendance

During the 2026 summer season, the number of active cinemas reached 13,100, with total screenings hitting 38.72 million, setting a new record for the period. Meanwhile, only 103 new films were released during this window, a reduction of 17 compared to the previous year, showing a clear contraction in film supply. Despite this, average film quality improved amid rising box office totals, with major titles making outsized contributions. Total attendance reached 340 million, up 5.9% year-on-year, while the average ticket price fell to 36.7 yuan, a 1.6% decline. Even with lower ticket prices, demand-side attendance showed a clear rebound.

Market Concentration Declines, With Top Films Forming a Pattern of Multiple Strong Contenders

The 2026 summer box office was more dispersed, characterized by a "multiple strong contenders" structure at the top and relative balance in the mid-tier. Seventeen films surpassed the 100-million-yuan mark during the season, with four films crossing the 1-billion-yuan threshold—just one fewer than the five in 2023. These top four films together accounted for 62% of the total box office, underscoring a pronounced blockbuster effect. Looking at the tier breakdown, Kung Fu Women's Football led the pack with 2.315 billion yuan, leveraging director Stephen Chow's star power and comedic appeal to become the season's only film to exceed the 2-billion-yuan mark, representing 18.5% of the season's total revenue and securing its place as the clear frontrunner. The second tier featured Welcome to the Dragon Restaurant, The Eight Immortals, and Spider-Man: A New Dawn in second, third, and fourth place respectively, locked in tight competition. Welcome to the Dragon Restaurant saw strong word-of-mouth momentum after its release, with projections suggesting it could eventually challenge the 2.5-billion-yuan mark. The Eight Immortals broke the five-year record for animated film box office during the summer season, thanks to its polished traditional Chinese aesthetic. Spider-Man: A New Dawn ranked fourth with 1.539 billion yuan, marking the first time a Hollywood live-action film has returned to the 1.5-billion-yuan tier since 2023.

Cinema Chain Competitive Landscape Reshaped, With a Noticeable Slowdown in Theater Construction

Significant shifts occurred in the rankings of major cinema chains. Ruyi Cinema continued to lead with a 17% market share, generating 2.13 billion yuan in box office revenue and posting the highest supply-demand index at 1.57. China Film Cinema and China Film South followed in second and third place, while Jinyi Zhujiang climbed three spots in the rankings, and Zhejiang Era and Huaxia United each advanced one position. The pace of new theater construction slowed considerably, with channel expansion entering a phase focused on optimizing existing assets. During the 2026 summer season, 129 new cinemas opened, a decrease of 85 year-on-year, while new screens added totaled 763, down 455 from the prior year.
