Long-term European government bond yields rose, tracking a jump in US Treasury yields after US inflation came in above expectations, boosting rate hike expectations.

The 10-year German bund yield briefly rose 4 basis points to 3.51%, before retreating to 3.46% by the close. The 2-year German bund yield fell 2 basis points to 3.13%; European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said that rising energy prices have not yet passed through to the broader economy, a remark that supported short-term bonds.

UK gilts rose, led by short-term bonds, after Bank of England Chief Economist Huw Pill hinted that the market is pricing in too much UK rate tightening.

Market levels:

The 10-year German bund yield rose 1 basis point to 3.48%; German 10-year bund futures fell 14 ticks to 120.95; the 10-year Italian bond yield rose 4 basis points to 4.57%; the spread between Italian and German 10-year bond yields widened 3 basis points to 109 basis points; the 10-year French bond yield rose 5 basis points to 4.89%; the 10-year UK gilt yield fell 2 basis points to 5.43%.
