Telecom Sector Explores Stablecoin Settlements as New Avenue for Financial Operations

On September 17th, telecom operators are increasingly integrating certain financial processes into blockchain networks. A report from September 16th noted that Latin American carrier VIVA is leveraging Iris to conduct settlements via stablecoins and manage eligible USD operating reserves.

The case stands out for its use of existing customer and billing frameworks, allowing digital asset technology to serve established business workflows. Carriers' long-standing capabilities in identity, billing, and distribution provide a gateway for new services. If financial systems can reuse this data, some integration costs may decline, though business synergy still hinges on consistent data standards.

A clear correspondence between communication accounts, payment records, and financial ledgers is essential to reduce redundant reconciliation efforts. Stablecoin settlement also introduces the need to match assets and liabilities in the same currency. Holding some reserves in USD can shift the currency mix of working capital, but it does not automatically eliminate fluctuations from local expenditures or exchange conversions.

When assessing the impact, the full cycle of receivables, payables, and fund conversions must be compared, while distinguishing which reserves qualify for stablecoin use and which must retain traditional pathways. If errors arise in legacy systems, the ability to trace both old and new accounting entries jointly will also affect the operational costs of migration.

Whether this business model can scale should be answered by actual operational outcomes. For future validation, analysis suggests monitoring whether settlement costs, fund availability times, and customer service burdens improve. A single carrier's adoption offers a starting point, but more successive cases with consistent statistical standards will help determine the replicability of stablecoin use in telecom finance.
