The "2026 Sina Global Capital Summit," organized by Sina Finance, was held in Hong Kong, China, on July 16. The event, themed "Based in Hong Kong, with a Global Vision," brought together leading figures from politics, business, academia, and research worldwide for in-depth discussions on key topics including global capital market trends, cross-border capital allocation, and the international expansion of technology firms.

The summit featured a distinguished lineup of speakers, including senior government officials, representatives from international financial institutions, top investment banks, industry leaders, and leading academics. Participants engaged in high-level dialogues on the new directions within global financial markets.

Dr. Dong Yiyue, the Executive Director of the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council, attended the conference and delivered a keynote speech.

Dr. Dong Yiyue stated that Hong Kong is a part of China and serves as its most open window to the outside world. He emphasized that if this window is not "breathable," the nation itself would struggle to "breathe." The critical question for Hong Kong, he noted, is how to make this gateway more fluid and achieve effective two-way circulation between the internal and external environments.

As the world's largest buyer of major commodities like gold, China still relies heavily on third-party currencies for settlement in many transactions, which incurs additional costs. Against a backdrop of geopolitical instability, Dr. Dong argued that Hong Kong should strive for greater influence in pricing power and the choice of settlement currency for these commodities.
