Institutions: Gold Withstood the US Treasury Storm in Q3, but Q4 Volatility Risks Should Not Be Ignored

Gold prices continued to face multiple headwinds from elevated inflation, rising interest rates and climbing US Treasury yields in the third quarter, yet gold displayed remarkable resilience, still posting sizable gains even as long-term US Treasury yields surged to 24-year highs during the period.

Analysts at Invesco noted in their latest quarterly outlook that rising inflation pressures, higher rates and yields, combined with central bank structural gold buying demand and returning flows into gold ETFs, are two opposing forces expected to continue dominating gold price direction through the final three months of the year. Short-term suppression from high yields coexists with long-term structural support, and gold is now at a critical juncture of intense tug-of-war between bulls and bears.

Gold Rose Against the Tide in Q3, the Treasury Storm Failed to Shake It

Invesco analysts said gold closed at $4,157 per ounce at the end of September, up 3.7% for the third quarter. This positive return was hard-won, as global bond markets suffered a massive selloff during the same period, with long-term US Treasury yields rising to more than two-decade highs. The 10-year Treasury yield ended September at 5.28% and the 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.63%, both marking their highest closing levels since 2002.

The analysts explained that rising bond yields, especially higher real yields, increase the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset like gold. But they also noted that the historical correlation between gold and real interest rates has weakened markedly in recent years. Since 2022, when Russia's reserve assets were frozen, central banks have continued buying gold regardless of price, reshaping the traditional pricing logic between gold and interest rates, the analysts said.

Inflation Remains the Biggest Short-Term Risk, Fed Maintains Tightening Bias

Looking ahead, Invesco believes persistently elevated inflation remains the most notable short-term risk for gold, especially as economic growth retains some resilience. The report mentioned that the Federal Reserve raised rates by 25 basis points in September, bringing the target range to 3.75% to 4%. The Fed's latest economic projections also signaled at least one more rate hike this year. However, Invesco said the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) inflation data released at the end of September came in weaker than expected, significantly reducing market expectations for an October rate hike. According to CME FedWatch data, the market now sees only a 21% probability of a hike later this month. The Fed's October meeting is highly likely to leave rates unchanged, with policymakers waiting for more economic data before assessing whether to hike in December.

The analysts judged that persistent inflation pressures will force the Fed to maintain a tightening stance. At the same time, Invesco cautioned that stronger economic growth is pushing bond yields higher, posing additional challenges for gold investors.

Fiscal Risks Are Rising, US Debt Supply Pressure May Push Yields Higher

Invesco also pointed out that market concerns about US federal government borrowing continue to intensify, with the size of US Treasury debt surpassing $40 trillion in the third quarter. As fiscal risks accumulate, investors may demand more risk compensation for holding long-term government bonds, further pushing bond yields higher. Although a rising term premium is typically seen as a factor weighing on gold prices, worries about fiscal sustainability may also lead some investors to re-examine the status of sovereign bonds as a safe asset, indirectly benefiting gold's value as a safe-haven allocation.

ETF Holdings Rebounded from the Bottom, Central Bank Gold Buying Hit Another Record

Despite the many challenges, Invesco stressed that the underlying investment case for gold remains solid. The report showed that for most of 2026, global physical gold ETF holdings continued to decline, as high gold prices combined with a strong stock market eroded gold's appeal in diversified portfolios. But this trend reversed sharply in the third quarter, with global gold ETF holdings reaching their highest level in 12 months at the end of September. Central bank demand also provided important support. Citing World Gold Council data, Invesco noted that in the second quarter of 2026, central bank gold purchases hit a record for that period. Reserve managers are placing increasing emphasis on geopolitical risks and the safety of gold reserves, and this structural demand is expected to continue in the fourth quarter. Invesco judged that central bank reserve diversification, geopolitical uncertainty and recovering investment demand will continue to support gold prices, even if high interest rates and high bond yields pose clear short-term challenges.

Q4 Volatility Risks Remain, Liquidity Squeeze Warrants Caution

Invesco maintained a positive long-term outlook on gold but cautioned that investors need to prepare for continued volatility in the fourth quarter. The analysts said that if financial markets remain highly volatile, it would not be surprising for gold prices to fluctuate, and such swings may even be unrelated to gold's own fundamental outlook. During periods of significant stress in financial markets, even investors who are bullish on gold in the long term may be forced to sell gold holdings to meet margin calls or offset losses in other parts of their portfolios. For investors who have accumulated considerable unrealized gains from gold's rise in recent years, this risk deserves particular attention. Even so, Invesco still believes that continued central bank gold buying to advance reserve diversification will continue to provide structural support for gold.

Conclusion

Overall, gold stands at the intersection of short-term macro headwinds and long-term structural support. High inflation, high interest rates and high bond yields will continue to weigh on gold prices in the fourth quarter, but continued central bank gold buying, returning gold ETF flows, and fiscal and geopolitical uncertainty form a long-term buying force that is hard to shake. Invesco reminds investors to have both confidence and caution against volatility, because when markets swing sharply, gold may not be able to remain entirely insulated. The short-term direction of gold prices depends largely on inflation data and the Fed's policy path, while the real support comes from the deeper trend of a restructuring of the global reserve system.
