United Microelectronics (UMC.US) reported its third-quarter 2025 earnings before the U.S. market opened on Wednesday, October 29. The financial results revealed revenue of $1.94 billion, up 1.6% year-over-year and $50 million above expectations. Earnings per ADS stood at $0.197, surpassing estimates by $0.08. Net income attributable to parent company shareholders reached NT$14.98 billion.

The company posted a consolidated gross margin of 29.8% and an operating profit margin of 18.8% for the quarter. Co-President Jason Wang noted, "In Q3, we observed demand growth across most market segments, driving a 3.4% increase in wafer shipments and raising capacity utilization to 78%. Notably, we benefited from rebounding smartphone and laptop sales, which spurred customer replenishment orders."

UMC's 22nm technology platform continues to differentiate in the market, with 22nm revenue now accounting for over 10% of total sales. More than 50 products are expected to launch in 2025 alone, and the company anticipates further growth in 22nm contributions by 2026. Revenue from 40nm and below technologies represented 52% of wafer sales, with 22/28nm contributing 35%.

For Q4, UMC expects wafer shipments to remain steady with Q3 levels, projecting low double-digit shipment growth for full-year 2025. The company remains committed to delivering competitive process technologies to support diverse applications, positioning it to capitalize on broad market recovery—particularly through its 22nm logic and specialty platforms, which are expected to drive future growth.
