European equities advanced during the busiest day of earnings season, as robust results from companies like Schneider Electric, Rolls-Royce Holdings, and several major banks outweighed a sharp drop in Sanofi's share price.

The Stoxx Europe 600 index rose 0.8% in London, with mining and banking sectors leading the gains. Schneider Electric surged 11% after raising its guidance, while Rolls-Royce Holdings climbed 6% following a second upgrade to its outlook. The UK's FTSE 100 initially rose 0.7% to an intraday record, before giving back all gains to close 0.1% lower. The Bank of England held interest rates steady, with Governor Andrew Bailey emphasising that the Monetary Policy Committee is not moving closer to a rate hike.

On the other hand, Sanofi fell 8.9%, posting the biggest drag on the index. Societe Generale, Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, and ING Group all reported strong results, pushing the banking sector index up 2.6%. DSM-Firmenich AG jumped 12% after its quarterly organic sales growth surpassed expectations.
