Morgan Stanley: Switching Battery Suppliers Carries High Opportunity Costs, Expects CATL's Market Share to Keep Expanding

Morgan Stanley has released a research report indicating that recent announcements by certain Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers to source batteries from suppliers other than CATL (03750) have reignited market concerns over the company's competitive edge. The bank notes that while past discussions have centered on BYD's (01211) DMI platform and XPeng's (09868) shift to alternative battery providers, CATL's market share has actually continued to climb.

Morgan Stanley believes that CATL will sustain and even expand its market presence through relentless product innovation and performance enhancements. The firm has reiterated an "Overweight" rating on CATL's A-shares (300750.SZ) with a target price of 595 yuan, listing it among its top stock picks.

The bank highlights that automakers are discovering the substantial opportunity costs tied to switching battery suppliers. Meanwhile, CATL's brand recognition among consumers has risen dramatically over the past five years, cementing its status as the quality benchmark for EV buyers. Over the last three years, reliability concerns among second-tier battery manufacturers have become more pronounced.

Although many carmakers have pursued supplier diversification to reduce dependence on CATL, these efforts have seemingly fallen short of expectations. Several automakers have previously reported quality-related setbacks, including recalls, warranty expenses, and damage to brand value, underscoring the significant costs of moving away from an industry leader.
