Hyundai Motor Company and its subsidiary Kia Corporation announced on Tuesday that they will incorporate autonomous driving technology from U.S. tech giant NVIDIA into certain vehicle models, further deepening their collaboration with the American firm in future mobility solutions.

In a press release, Hyundai Motor Group stated that under the cooperative agreement, the two South Korean automakers will combine their respective software-defined vehicle (SDV) technologies with NVIDIA’s Level 2+ autonomous driving capabilities to jointly develop next-generation self-driving systems.

The group indicated it will utilize NVIDIA’s data platform and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, systematically integrating accumulated data into a unified learning process.

Additionally, Hyundai Motor Group will partner with NVIDIA through its U.S.-based autonomous driving joint venture, Motional, to further enhance Motional’s Level 4 autonomous taxi capabilities.

“Expanding our collaboration with NVIDIA marks a significant step forward in Hyundai Motor Group’s vision to realize safe and reliable autonomous driving technology,” said Kim Heung-soo, Executive Vice President and Head of the Global Strategy Office at Hyundai Motor Group.

“Through a unified group cooperation framework, we will enhance our technological competitiveness—from Level 2 and above autonomous systems to Level 4 driverless taxi services.”

The group noted that it will build an integrated autonomous driving architecture based on NVIDIA’s Drive Hyperion platform, scalable from Level 2 to Level 4.

Level 2 autonomous systems require the driver to remain attentive, continuously monitor the surroundings, and be prepared to take control at any time.

Level 3 autonomous vehicles can perform certain driving tasks, such as lane changes, without driver intervention under specific conditions. Level 4 vehicles can operate autonomously in limited environments but will not function if necessary conditions are not met. Level 5 vehicles are fully self-driving under all conditions without human input.

“The future of mobility will be built on AI and software,” said Rishi Dhall, Vice President of Automotive at NVIDIA. “By combining Hyundai Motor Group’s leadership in vehicle engineering with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and AI technologies, we are creating safe, intelligent autonomous systems powered by the NVIDIA Drive platform.”
