30 Days Before Collapse, AI 'Stock Oracle' Piled into Micron and SanDisk

The recent implosion of the high-leverage fund Situational Awareness has sent shockwaves through capital markets. New regulatory filings reveal that the AI-driven hedge fund, helmed by a so-called "AI stock oracle," was aggressively buying semiconductor stocks right up to its final month before the crash.

According to the filings, Situational Awareness significantly increased its stakes in memory chip makers Micron Technology and SanDisk Corp. during the second quarter of the year. Combined holdings in these two companies totaled approximately $11 billion, representing roughly a quarter of the fund's net asset value at the time. Simultaneously, the fund reduced its short option positions against NVIDIA, Broadcom, and LS 3X NVIDIA.

This strategic positioning, however, subsequently suffered severe damage. During last month's sharp sell-off in AI-related stocks, Micron Technology shares fell 29%, while SanDisk Corp. plummeted by a steeper 47%. The rapid depreciation of these technology holdings forced the highly leveraged fund to passively sell public shares, with Ken Griffin's Citadel ultimately acquiring a large portion of the fund's AI stock portfolio.

Aggressive Memory Chip Buildup Paired with Reduced Hedging

Founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, Situational Awareness was positioned to bet on the wave of artificial intelligence infrastructure. However, last month's massive, concentrated sell-off in AI stocks hit memory chips particularly hard. Second-quarter filings show that while increasing its positions in Micron Technology and SanDisk Corp., the fund simultaneously cut its short option positions on NVIDIA, Broadcom, and LS 3X NVIDIA. This maneuver indicates that fund management had adopted a more bullish outlook on the semiconductor sector at the time, actively reducing its hedging exposure and thereby amplifying its net long position.

For Situational Awareness, the combination of high leverage and an extremely concentrated portfolio multiplied the impact of the downturn. The $11 billion concentrated position covered only two stocks. When liquidity tightened rapidly and net asset value suffered a significant drawdown, the fund had virtually no room to maneuver. It was subsequently forced to initiate a forced liquidation of its public stock holdings.

Notably, Citadel's flagship Wellington fund surged 5.9% in July, with the primary driver being a lightning-fast transaction where it acquired Situational Awareness's public stock holdings at roughly a 10% discount. Before this trade commenced in the final week of July, the Wellington fund's monthly gain was only about 0.45%; the discount acquisition provided nearly instant returns.
