Tarim Oilfield Achieves Milestone with 500 Billion Cubic Meters of Cumulative Natural Gas Output

Tarim Oilfield in China has surpassed 500 billion cubic meters in total natural gas production as of March 3. Calculations indicate that this volume of natural gas is equivalent to replacing approximately 660 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 730 million tons. The environmental benefits are comparable to planting 22 billion hectares of broad-leaved forest. This clean energy has not only contributed to clearer skies in southern Xinjiang but has also facilitated the optimization and upgrading of energy and industrial structures in central and eastern China, particularly in the Yangtze River Delta region, generating significant social, economic, and ecological benefits. The Tarim Basin is the largest oil and gas-bearing basin on land in China and one of the regions with the most challenging exploration conditions and greatest potential for increasing reserves and production. The discovery of the Kela-2 gas field in 1998, then the largest integrated gas field in China, directly led to the construction of the West-East Gas Pipeline project. Since then, Tarim Oilfield has identified two major gas regions—Kela-Keshen and Bozi-Dabei—each with reserves exceeding one trillion cubic meters, and has successfully developed 19 large and medium-sized gas fields. Currently, natural gas produced by Tarim Oilfield is supplied through the West-East Gas Pipeline to benefit 15 provincial-level regions along the route. Additionally, the "Gasification of Southern Xinjiang" project has extended clean energy access to numerous counties, cities, and agricultural areas in southern Xinjiang, bringing clean energy to millions of households.
