At 9 a.m. on the 15th, the newly renovated home-based elderly care service center in Fengying Community, Mashan Street, Binhu District, was bustling with activity. Bai Zhengzhou, a 79-year-old resident, along with his neighbors, had just finished a free health consultation with doctors from Haijiya Hospital's Traditional Chinese Medicine department on the first floor, before moving to the activity room to craft Mid-Autumn Festival-themed handicrafts. The group also planned to visit the second-floor day care center for a TCM massage later that afternoon.

From fixed health and wellness services to on-site consultations with specialists from major hospitals, this nearly 500-square-meter building has evolved into a thriving "complex" for community elderly care, continuously expanding the boundaries of what such services can offer. Covering an area of 7.8 square kilometers, Fengying Community includes two older residential areas and one commercial housing development, with a permanent population of around 11,000—of whom nearly 1,500 are residents aged 60 or older. As the elderly population grows and the proportion of advanced-age seniors increases, the demand for diverse and high-quality services—spanning medical care, day care, and recreational activities—continues to rise, alongside a growing call for refined, consistent, and top-tier home-based care solutions.

Addressing the pressing needs of its elderly residents, the community has undertaken a comprehensive upgrade of its existing care service infrastructure, tailored to its unique demographic realities. By optimizing spatial layouts, enhancing age-friendly amenities, and modernizing service systems, the community has tackled the shortcomings of traditional care models that were often singular in approach, fragmented in function, and limited in delivery. This efficient use of space has enabled the creation of a new, well-organized community care framework that is comprehensive in coverage, precise in delivery, and fully functional—ensuring that the care center is both vibrant and effectively utilized, bringing warmth to all who use it.

Stepping inside the upgraded center, the space is bright and spacious, with clearly defined functional zones across two floors. The first floor focuses on activities, leisure, and meal services, with rooms for table tennis, fitness, and chess arranged in sequence. "Previously, I had to travel far for rehab therapy or to find friends for a card game. Now, with dining, fitness, and chess all available right at my doorstep, my days are fulfilling and comfortable," said Jiang Yincai, an elderly resident, with a smile.

Moving to the second floor, visitors find the core health and wellness service area, complete with day care rooms and psychological counseling spaces. "The second floor offers better natural light, and since our seniors love soaking up the sun, we've centralized the wellness section here," explained a community official. This area integrates rehabilitation care, psychological support, and cultural leisure, addressing both the physical and spiritual needs of the elderly. Beyond the regular services offered within the building, the center is complemented by flexible, mobile services. Local health service centers and Haijiya Hospital provide on-site consultations twice a month, while Tongshan Dental offers monthly oral health check-ups, delivering free services such as blood pressure and glucose monitoring, as well as chronic disease follow-ups, ensuring residents have access to professional medical care without leaving the community.

As quality medical resources are integrated on a regular basis, the community's care services are also extending outward. Future plans include bringing in professional fitness trainers for age-appropriate exercise classes, along with added conveniences like barber services, yoga, and dance sessions, bringing a diverse array of care options directly to elderly residents. The facility's thoughtful hardware design is equally impressive. Every part of the space has been tailored to seniors' habits and home life, featuring slip-resistant flooring, assisted bathing chairs, one-touch call systems, age-friendly dining tables, and rounded door handles. By seamlessly blending senior-friendly renovations with accessible facilities, the center offers a comprehensive care environment combining medicine, nursing, support, culture, and entertainment, truly enabling elderly residents to enjoy convenient, high-quality services close to home.

The launch of this upgraded home-based care center is a vivid example of Fengying Community's efforts to fill gaps in grassroots elderly care and build an age-friendly neighborhood. In recent years, the community has prioritized elderly care as a key livelihood project, leveraging its "Fengyi Zhuying" community fund to empower care initiatives and collaborating with local health centers, pharmacy chains, and top-tier hospitals to establish a medical-care partnership system. It has also opened the first community "Happiness Canteen" in Mashan Street and formed the "Golden Warm Sun" volunteer team, creating a comprehensive, community-based care system that integrates medical support, convenience, safety, and reassurance—continually enhancing the happiness, fulfillment, and security of its elderly residents. Moving forward, Fengying Community will build on this renewed care infrastructure, continuing to pool quality resources, optimize service systems, and innovate governance approaches. With dedication and heart, it aims to deliver inclusive care, targeted assistance, and neighborly co-governance, striving to become a benchmark for community elderly care that is warm, distinctive, and high-quality—ensuring that local seniors can truly age with dignity, joy, security, and purpose.
