CoreWeave Surges After Q2 Revenue Doubles, Backlog Tops $104 Billion; Earnings Highlights

CoreWeave, Inc. delivered another strong quarterly performance, signaling that demand for AI infrastructure remains robust as enterprises and AI companies continue to scale up their computing investments.

Second-quarter revenue surged approximately 112% year-over-year to $2.575 billion, slightly exceeding the market consensus of around $2.56 billion. The company reported a net loss of $626 million, or $1.14 per share, which was narrower than the analyst estimate of a $1.41 per-share loss.

One of the most closely watched metrics, the revenue backlog, reached roughly $104 billion, up from $99.4 billion at the end of the first quarter. The company also disclosed that it secured over $25 billion in new customer commitments at the start of the third quarter, which are not yet included in the $104 billion backlog. This comes after the backlog grew 284% year-over-year at the end of the first quarter.

The CEO noted that contracts signed in the second quarter are expected to deliver profit margins 5 to 10 percentage points higher than those from recent quarters. Following the earnings release, CoreWeave, Inc. shares jumped 16% in after-hours trading, and the stock has risen approximately 26% year-to-date as of Tuesday's close.

AI Computing Orders Continue Rapid Growth

On the operational front, CoreWeave, Inc. is rapidly expanding its AI infrastructure capacity. The company increased its active power capacity by nearly 500 megawatts in the second quarter to 1.5 gigawatts, while total contracted power capacity reached about 3.7 gigawatts. It also expanded its data center land bank and supplier portfolio.

The company is broadening its client base, which now includes AI labs, hyperscale cloud providers, and large enterprises. New customers added include Bentley Systems, Caterpillar, Grammarly, Isomorphic Labs, and Sunday Robotics, while existing partnerships with Cognition, Databricks, Hudson River Trading, Rescale, and Runway ML have been deepened.

CoreWeave, Inc. reported that it completed the industry's first deployment of the Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 system and set new MLPerf training and inference records on the Nvidia Grace Blackwell platform. These milestones indicate the company is evolving from a pure GPU provider into an integrated AI cloud platform covering training, inference, data transfer, and AI agent environments.

CEO Michael Intrator stated that customer demand is accelerating as enterprise AI adoption broadens and the company's technology platform deepens.

Revenue Surge Obscured by Persistent Profitability Concerns

While the revenue and backlog figures are strong, CoreWeave, Inc.'s income statement continues to face significant pressure. Operating expenses in the second quarter totaled $2.624 billion, more than doubling year-over-year, leading to an operating loss of $49 million. More notably, net interest expense surged to $640 million from $267 million in the same period last year.

The company's net loss for the second quarter reached $626 million, with the loss rate holding steady at around 24% of revenue, though the absolute loss amount has grown substantially. On a non-GAAP basis, adjusted EBITDA rose to $1.51 billion, up about 100% year-over-year, but the adjusted EBITDA margin slipped to 59% from 62% a year ago. Adjusted operating profit fell to $128 million from $200 million.

This suggests that while CoreWeave, Inc. is securing more AI computing orders, revenue growth is still accompanied by massive financing costs and infrastructure investments, and scale expansion has not yet fully translated into profit growth. This is the key concern for Wall Street: the $104 billion backlog provides high revenue visibility, but the question remains how much capital will be needed to fulfill these orders and how much cash flow will ultimately be generated.

High-Debt Strategy Betting on Long-Term AI Infrastructure Boom

CoreWeave, Inc. has pursued an aggressive expansion strategy, borrowing heavily to purchase AI chips and build data centers to meet the growing computing demands of large clients. In the second quarter, the company completed a $3.1 billion term loan and raised over $10 billion through unsecured bonds and convertible notes, including its first-ever euro-denominated bonds.

Additionally, Jane Street made a $1 billion strategic investment in CoreWeave, Inc.. The continued expansion of financing indicates that financial institutions and major clients remain willing to fund AI infrastructure, but it also highlights the company's increasing reliance on capital markets and debt financing.

Analysts note that while the quarter's metrics generally exceeded expectations, the results were not a "blowout." The market had already anticipated high growth, so a simple revenue beat is not enough to fully alleviate concerns about margins and debt levels.

CoreWeave as a Barometer for AI Capital Expenditure

CoreWeave, Inc. stands out as one of the few publicly traded "neocloud" providers, making its order book and data center expansion a key indicator for AI computing demand. The core signal from its earnings report is that AI compute demand remains strong enough to support continued large-scale infrastructure expansion.

Microsoft recently reported its fastest cloud revenue growth in four years, while Alphabet's Google Cloud also exceeded revenue expectations in the second quarter, with its backlog growing to $514 billion from around $460 billion in the first quarter. CoreWeave, Inc.'s backlog of $104 billion, along with the additional $25 billion in new commitments, suggests that the AI infrastructure investment cycle shows no signs of cooling down.

The stock has experienced significant volatility recently. AI-focused fund Situational Awareness sold its public market holdings, putting pressure on AI infrastructure stocks like CoreWeave, Inc., but market sentiment quickly recovered after Citadel bought a large portion of those AI stocks. Bloomberg data shows that as of the end of March, Situational Awareness held approximately 1.6% of CoreWeave, Inc.'s outstanding shares.
