American Eagle Outfitters' stock plummeted 12.17% in after-hours trading following the release of its first-quarter fiscal 2026 results. The apparel retailer reported a swing to profitability with adjusted earnings per share of $0.14, beating consensus estimates of $0.12, and revenue of $1.2 billion, slightly above expectations.

Despite the earnings beat, investors reacted negatively to the company's mixed performance across its brands. While the Aerie brand delivered record revenue with comparable sales soaring 25%, the core American Eagle brand saw comparable sales decline 2%. The company maintained its full-year outlook, expecting comparable sales to grow in the mid-single digits, citing ongoing geopolitical uncertainty and cautious consumer spending.

The decline comes amid broader sector concerns about apparel demand, with peer Gap cutting its annual sales forecast on pressured discretionary spending. American Eagle's management noted weakness in the women's bottoms category and reported a 27% year-over-year increase in inventory, which contributed to investor disappointment despite the quarterly earnings beat.
