Lockheed Martin (LMT) has announced plans to introduce a new, lower-cost Patriot missile variant with faster delivery times to address the ongoing decline in global inventories of advanced air defense interceptors.

The company, whose stock was down 0.92%, noted that as nations continue to deplete their reserves of sophisticated air defense munitions, it will launch a new Patriot missile modification that is cheaper and has a shorter fielding cycle.

The new missile, named the PAC-3 Adapted Capability Effector, features significantly improved production efficiency. Its unit cost is less than half that of the popular PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) variant. Recent U.S. military budget documents indicate the procurement cost for a single MSE interceptor exceeds $4 million.

Lockheed stated that this new Patriot variant can engage various incoming threats, including cruise missiles and short-range ballistic missiles. However, the company did not disclose its capability against long-range ballistic missiles, a weapon Russia has used extensively to inflict significant damage in Ukraine.

Patriot missile launcher manufacturer Raytheon Technologies (RTX) and Lockheed Martin have both committed to tripling or quadrupling production capacity for certain high-tech missiles over the coming years, as requested by the White House. However, military officials have concurrently emphasized an urgent need for more low-cost, medium-range air defense assets in the arsenal, with delivery timelines measured in months rather than years.

U.S. military procurement official Brent Ingraham recently acknowledged at an industry forum, "The original PAC-3 was not designed with mass production in mind." He pointed out that the missile relies heavily on handcrafted components and manual assembly, lacking the highly automated production lines common in automotive manufacturing.

This year, the U.S. military initiated a competitive program to develop a low-cost interceptor, aiming to keep the unit cost below $1 million. The program encourages the development of entirely new core components, such as seekers and rocket motors. The new missile must be compatible with existing Patriot launchers.

Lockheed Martin plans to publicly unveil the design of this new missile on Monday at the Farnborough International Airshow. In recent years, military equipment has garnered nearly as much attention as civilian airliners at this event.
