US Bond Yields Rise for Second Straight Day as Markets Await Warsh's Jackson Hole Address

US Treasury yields advanced for a second consecutive session on Thursday, as investors positioned ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Warsh's highly anticipated speech at the Jackson Hole global central banking symposium on Friday. Market participants widely expect Warsh to deliver a hawkish policy message in response to persistently elevated long-term bond yields and ongoing inflationary pressures, a move aimed at stabilizing the long end of the curve.

Across the board, Treasury yields climbed roughly 1 to 2 basis points on Thursday, with longer-dated maturities posting more noticeable gains. The long end of the curve has remained under sustained pressure recently, as investors keep a watchful eye on the US inflation outlook and widening fiscal concerns. The 30-year Treasury yield rose to approximately 5.2%, having earlier this month touched its highest level since 2007, a spike that prompted the Treasury Department to announce an expansion of its long-dated bond buyback program in an effort to ease selling pressure in that segment of the market. Despite these official measures, long-term yields have stayed elevated, signaling that market unease over the nation's fiscal trajectory and inflation risks has yet to fully dissipate.

Against this backdrop, Warsh's Friday remarks at Jackson Hole have become one of the most closely watched events in global financial markets this week. Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, said in an interview that Warsh is likely to present an economic outlook with a hawkish tilt, seeking to prevent long-term Treasury yields from climbing even further. Slok cautioned that if Warsh fails to offer a clear policy framework or forward guidance, long-term interest rates could face another significant upward move.

Ahead of Warsh's address, Kansas City Fed President Schmid said on Thursday that current monetary policy is not constraining the US economy. At its most recent policy meeting, the Federal Reserve held the federal funds rate target range steady at 3.5% to 3.75%. As it stands, interest rate futures markets imply roughly one additional 25-basis-point rate hike by the end of the year. Consequently, how Warsh assesses current rate levels, inflation risks, and the future direction of monetary policy on Friday will directly shape market expectations for the timing of the next rate increase.

That said, short-term rate markets indicate that not all investors are convinced the Fed will act imminently. On Thursday, a sizable federal funds futures trade emerged, with one or more traders purchasing approximately 45,000 October federal funds futures contracts. That position aligns with expectations that the Fed will hold rates steady through December. As of 9:30 a.m. New York time, the transaction accounted for roughly one-third of the day's total volume in that contract, suggesting some market participants are betting against a near-term hike.

Meanwhile, markets continue to price in about a one-in-three probability of a 25-basis-point rate increase at the Fed's September meeting, reflecting lingering divergence among investors over the near-term policy path. Also lending some support to Treasury yields on Thursday was the latest US labor market data, which showed a decline in weekly initial jobless claims relative to the prior week, underscoring continued resilience in the jobs market. With the Fed remaining focused on inflation pressures, a relatively firm employment picture implies less urgency for the central bank to pivot quickly toward easing.

Overall, with the 30-year Treasury yield back above 5.2%, market attention has now shifted squarely to Warsh's Jackson Hole speech on Friday. Investors are particularly keen to see whether he will use a hawkish tone to stabilize the long-dated Treasury market and whether he will offer any new clues regarding the path of rate hikes for September and the remainder of the year.
