Option Focus | Alphabet’s $3.50 Million Synthetic Call and Bull Put Spread Signal Institutional Confidence Despite 3.58% Drop

09/24

Alphabet closed at $334.98, down 3.58%, after ranging between $346.33 and $334.20 on volume of about 23.24 million shares.

The largest displayed options trades showed a distinctly bullish institutional bias. A $3.50 million synthetic call position expressed long stock exposure with limited downside, while a separate bull put spread collected a $768,400 net credit. Both structures leaned constructive despite the session’s decline, suggesting large traders viewed the pullback as an opportunity to position for longer-dated upside and resilience in Alphabet shares.

Options Indicators

Alphabet’s implied volatility is 35.35%, and with an IV percentile of 54.18%, current volatility sits in a neutral range rather than at an extreme. In other words, options are neither especially cheap nor especially expensive versus their own recent history. The IV/HV ratio of 1.57 also shows implied volatility is running above realized volatility, suggesting the options market is pricing in a premium over recent actual movement.

The Call/Put volume ratio is 1.70.

Large Trades

A synthetic call position worth $3.50 million stood out as the largest displayed trade, built by buying the November 20, 2026 $360.00 call and selling the November 20, 2026 $290.00 put, both for 2,490 contracts. The call leg was bought for $2.63 million and was out of the money, while the short put leg brought in $871,500 and was also out of the money, leaving a net debit of $1.76 million. This structure expresses a clearly bullish stance that economically resembles long stock exposure with upside participation, suggesting the trader is positioning for Alphabet to rise meaningfully over the longer-dated horizon.

A bullish put spread with a net credit of $768,400 was the second displayed large trade, consisting of the sale of 1,700 November 20, 2026 $315.00 puts and the purchase of 2,550 November 20, 2026 $285.00 puts. Both strikes were out of the money versus the $334.98 reference stock price. As a bull put spread, this is a premium-collection strategy with defined downside protection, indicating the trader expects Alphabet to remain above the short-put strike or at least avoid a major breakdown into expiration. Overall, the bulk-order flow leans clearly bullish: the two most important trades were both constructive upside structures, and even though there were several smaller bearish put and call sales elsewhere in the tape, the dominant institutional positioning favored upside exposure and confidence that Alphabet can stay resilient or grind higher rather than enter a sustained decline.

Strategy Reference

For a low assignment probability on the put side, a seller could consider a strike near $290.00 or below, which aligns with the short leg of the displayed synthetic call and offers a wide cushion from the $334.98 close.
