Hong Kong Market Morning Briefing | Hang Seng Opens Flat, Banks and Insurers Gain, Hua Hong Grace Leads Blue Chip Movers

At the opening bell on September 7th, the Hang Seng Index started the session flat at 25,652.97 points, inching up by a marginal 0.01%. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng Tech Index dipped 0.26% to 4,558.07 points, and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index edged lower by 0.08% to 8,548.06 points.

Mainland Chinese bank and insurance stocks displayed strength in early trading. People's Insurance Company of China (01339) advanced over 3%, while China Taiping (00966) climbed nearly 3%. Both China Construction Bank (00939) and Agricultural Bank of China (01288) rose more than 1%, with China Reinsurance (01508) adding close to 2%.

Semiconductor stocks also moved higher, with HUA HONG GRACE (01347) surging nearly 2% at the open, leading gains among Hang Seng Index constituents. Tech internet names presented a mixed picture, with Baidu Group-SW (09888) advancing nearly 2%, while Bilibili-W (09626) slid over 2% and XPeng-W (09868) lost more than 1%.

Gold-related equities faced downward pressure, as Lingbao Gold (03330) fell over 3%, Chifeng Gold (06693) dropped beyond 2%, Shandong Gold (01787) lost over 1%, and Laopu Gold (06181) declined near 1%.

In corporate news, the Ministry of Finance disclosed on September 6th that eight central financial enterprises are set to receive a combined capital injection of 360 billion yuan to bolster their core tier-1 capital, with the Ministry contributing approximately 300 billion yuan. Beneficiaries include ICBC, Agricultural Bank of China, PICC, China Taiping, and China Life, fueling the upward momentum in banking and insurance shares.

Across the Atlantic, U.S. stocks closed lower on Friday, with the Dow dropping 0.51%, the S&P 500 losing 0.38%, and the Nasdaq declining 0.29%. Spot gold retreated to around $4,430 per ounce amid stronger-than-expected U.S. August nonfarm payrolls and heightened expectations for Federal Reserve rate hikes, dragging down gold stocks in Hong Kong.
