Fuel Crisis Drives Russian Consumers to Chinese Electric Vehicles

Russia's vast size, harsh climate, and limited charging infrastructure have historically constrained the development of its electric vehicle market. However, an escalating fuel crisis is now compelling some drivers to consider making the switch.

In recent weeks, intensified strikes on Russian energy infrastructure have led to gasoline and diesel shortages, prompting the implementation of rationing measures in most regions. Calculations indicate that retail gasoline prices in some areas have surged to rank among the highest in Europe.

Amid these circumstances, an automobile dealership in Moscow is struggling to keep up with robust consumer demand for new Chinese electric vehicle models.

Evgeny Zabelin, founder of EN Cars, a company specializing in Chinese brands, stated that his firm is now selling two to three electric vehicles daily. Just weeks ago, monthly sales stood at only two to three units. "Demand has increased several times since the fuel situation became complicated," he said, adding that consumer interest is rising across both economy and premium vehicle segments.

Sergei Udalov, Executive Director of the analytical agency Autostat, noted that sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles are growing, but from a low base. He attributed this to manufacturers and importers being unprepared for the fuel crisis and lacking sufficient inventory.

He added, however, that if the crisis persists, electric vehicle sales are poised for significant growth in the near future, with Chinese automakers positioned to be the primary beneficiaries.

According to Autostat statistics, the best-selling electric and hybrid vehicle brands in Russia are Chinese manufacturers Geely, Dongfeng, GAC, and Chery. The highest-volume domestically produced electric vehicle brand in Russia is Evolute, which is assembled using kits supplied by Dongfeng.

Data shows that in the first five months of this year, approximately 24,600 new plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in Russia, a 125% increase year-on-year. Sales of new pure electric vehicles grew by 19% to 4,460 units. With the emergence of fuel shortages, sales accelerated further in June.
