The surge followed the company's announcement that it has reached an agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on a path forward to resubmit its application for a late-stage melanoma therapy. The FDA has committed to treating the review as a priority matter. In April, the FDA had rejected Replimune's combination therapy for advanced melanoma for the second time. The therapy combines the company's investigational immunotherapy with another anti-cancer drug. The FDA's recent shift in stance, deciding to reconsider the application, is widely seen as a potential softening of the agency's previously stringent position on drug reviews. This change comes amid significant leadership changes at the FDA, most notably the departure of Commissioner Marty Makary. Year-to-date through Thursday's close, Replimune's stock had fallen 52%. It rebounded sharply at the New York market open on Friday, reaching an intraday high gain of 82%. BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman noted in a research report that the FDA's reversal "may reflect a desire to correct some unpopular decisions from the Makary era." However, he maintained a cautious view on Replimune's application, stating, "aside from the change in FDA leadership, we are not sure what has actually changed." The fate of Replimune's melanoma therapy has been closely watched by investors in the biotechnology sector, especially amid broader industry concerns over a recent series of FDA rejections for multiple drug applications. Notably, shares of UniQure NV (QURE.US), another company that has been in a dispute with the FDA over a gene therapy for Huntington's disease, also rose as much as 19% at the Friday open.
