According to Zhitong Finance APP, the hotter-than-expected U.S. September CPI reading fueled concerns over further Federal Reserve tightening, causing a broad cooldown in AI-related trades. Hong Kong's three major indices opened lower and drifted down throughout the day, with the Hang Seng Index barely holding the 24,000 mark. At the close, the Hang Seng Index fell 1.03%, or 251.45 points, to 24,062.72, with total daily turnover of HK$224.165 billion; the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index dropped 0.98% to 8,103.27; and the Hang Seng Tech Index declined 2.72% to 4,060.99.

Guotai Haitong stated that for Hong Kong stocks, headwinds from capital flows are increasing in the fourth quarter, and a reversal will depend on new narratives in the global AI industry, verification of a third-quarter earnings inflection point, or stronger-than-expected policy support. In terms of allocation, it emphasized the value of high-quality Hong Kong dividend assets as a core holding, noting that with external liquidity tightening and rising uncertainty, capital tends to flow into assets with stable cash flow and predictable dividends.

Blue-Chip Performance

Lenovo Group Ltd (00992) led blue-chip declines. At the close, it fell 14.54% to HK$25.98, with turnover of HK$6.425 billion. Overnight, AI server stocks Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise plunged 11% and 8.28%, respectively. Barclays analysts said they have yet to see a "meaningful AI inflection point" in corporate spending and downgraded Dell, HPE, and NetApp from "buy" to the equivalent of "hold." They believe revenue growth should be attributed to the global memory chip shortage and noted that infrastructure companies have passed on higher memory chip prices to customers.

Among other blue chips, BeOne Medicines Ltd (06160) rose 2.96% to HK$215.6; Hansoh Pharmaceutical (03692) gained 2.62% to HK$31.38; Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor Limited (01347) fell 7.83% to HK$76.55; and CATL (03750) dropped 3.94% to HK$448.6.

Hot Sectors

On the board, internet stocks broadly weakened, with Alibaba and Tencent both in the red; inflation and AI valuation bubble concerns hammered memory chips, optical communications, semiconductors, and other AI hardware segments across the board; reports that the U.S. is considering easing sanctions on shadow fleet oil tankers sent shipping stocks sharply lower; non-ferrous metals, airlines, and oil stocks came under pressure; on the other side, innovative drug stocks bucked the trend, while bank stocks were relatively resilient.

AI hardware stocks suffered a collective plunge. At the close, Yangtze Optical Fibre And Cable Joint Stock Limited Company (06869) fell 13.17% to HK$122.6; Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor Limited (01347) dropped 7.83% to HK$76.55; and Zhongji Innolight (03308) declined 7.49% to HK$784. The hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data, combined with AI valuation bubble worries, has triggered a new round of pressure on global tech stocks. U.S. September CPI rose 3.7% year-on-year, while core CPI climbed to 2.6%, both exceeding expectations. After the data release, market bets on a Fed rate hike in October briefly rose to 50%. In addition, CoreWeave bond yields broke above 15%, with prices falling below 80% of face value, sparking concerns about AI infrastructure financing costs. Goldman Sachs predicts that hyperscaler capital expenditure growth will peak at 116% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2026 before slowing to just over 20% by the end of 2027.

Shipping stocks fell sharply. At the close, Cosco Shipping Energy Transportation Co.,Ltd. (01138) dropped 15.64% to HK$18.34; Pacific Basin (02343) fell 9.73% to HK$3.62; SITC International (01308) declined 6.55% to HK$48.5; and Orient Overseas International (00316) fell 3.21% to HK$162.8. According to Jinshi, citing foreign media, the Trump administration is considering easing sanctions on certain "shadow fleet" oil tankers to relieve pressure from record-high global tanker freight rates. A U.S. official said Wednesday that the discussions involve vessels previously sanctioned for transporting oil and refined products from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. The move comes shortly after U.S. President Trump temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian diesel.

Non-ferrous metal stocks came under pressure. At the close, Cmoc Group Limited (03993) fell 6.83% to HK$14.19; MMG (01208) dropped 6.42% to HK$7.87; and Aluminum Corporation of China (02600) declined 6.27% to HK$7.18. U.S. September CPI rose 0.6% month-on-month on a seasonally adjusted basis and 3.7% year-on-year; core CPI rose 0.3% month-on-month and 2.6% year-on-year, both rebounding from the previous month and exceeding market expectations. After the data release, traders sharply increased bets on a Fed rate hike in October and expected three more cumulative rate hikes by the end of 2027. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield subsequently rose and the dollar strengthened, directly weighing on dollar-denominated non-ferrous metal commodity prices.

Innovative drug stocks advanced against the trend. At the close, BeOne Medicines Ltd (06160) rose 2.96% to HK$215.6; Zai Lab (09688) gained 2.69% to HK$17.95; Hansoh Pharmaceutical (03692) rose 2.62% to HK$31.38; and Sino Biopharmaceutical (01177) added 2.03% to HK$5.27. On the policy front, the Party Committee of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council held an expanded meeting on October 14, explicitly aiming to strengthen the core functions of the health industry and give play to the leading role of state-owned capital. The National Healthcare Security Administration proposed at an October 13 meeting to actively support pharmaceutical technology innovation and focus on exploring a "medical service price pre-establishment system," clearing bottlenecks for the commercialization and volume ramp-up of innovative products from both the payment and access perspectives. On the industry side, catalysts are密集. The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) annual meeting is approaching in late October, and more than 90 late-breaking abstract titles have already been released, with multiple Chinese original innovative assets set to be showcased.
