High-Protein Cereal and Cat Food: General Mills' Dual Strategy in a Tough Consumer Climate

In response to increasingly cost-conscious consumers and a persistently sluggish spending environment, the packaged food giant General Mills is aiming to recapture market share with more substantial products. During an earnings call on Wednesday, company executives clearly stated that the new fiscal year will involve a significant bet on premium product innovation, with high-protein cereal and cat food emerging as two core strategic weapons.

General Mills Chief Operating Officer Dana McNabb noted that consumers are still willing to pay for "benefits that matter most to them," such as functional nutrition and rich flavors. Under this strategy, protein-added Cheerios cereal has become a star performer. The company revealed that Cheerios Protein is on track to become a $100 million business by the end of this fiscal year. Additionally, the company plans to add protein to Honey Nut Cheerios, the top-selling cereal in the U.S., and will launch the Ghost protein bar nationwide. This protein trend aligns with consumer behavior—data shows 44% of American consumers are actively trying to increase their protein intake.

At the same time, the pet food business has become another bright spot. North American pet food sales grew 4% in the fourth quarter. Executives specifically highlighted that, even amid an uncertain consumer environment, premium, high-protein cat food products like Tiki Cat continue to drive growth. McNabb stated plainly, "The cat food market is growing very, very fast."

After employing price reductions to combat competition over the past year, General Mills is now pivoting toward a "better" strategy. The company has set a goal to achieve cumulative cost savings of $3 billion by fiscal 2030. It anticipates organic sales for the new fiscal year will range from a decline of 1.5% to growth of 0.5%, planning to navigate the uncertain market environment through innovation and adjusting its product portfolio.
